The Norman Wettenhall Foundation’s objective is to support projects that enhance or maintain the vitality and diversity of the Australian natural living environment.
The NWF has funded projects ranging from supporting local communities to maintain or restore habitat; to the production of education kits; and the publication and widespread dissemination of research information essential to species preservation. See the grants awarded section to see what projects have been successful in obtaining grants in the past.
Projects that involve collaboration with a number of partners across a region are of special interest. These multi-stakeholder projects are the ones we believe are most likely to have a long term effect and to most widely spread knowledge and understanding.
Notes:
- Even though the federal government funding has changed (Caring for our Country), small grants for on-ground works are still available through
various government agencies, local councils, and other landcare programs. We are too small to take the place of Envirofund, and would be out of money if we tried to fund on-ground works like fencing, weed and pest control, and tree planting. Neither do we have the capacity to fund Landcare coordinator positions.
- The NWF also tends not to fund large educational programs in primary and secondary schools that are focussed on curriculum changes. Any projects involving schools must be primarily about biodiversity conservation, and not be isolated to the school grounds. Again, we are too small to fund all the bush food gardens, vegie gardens and other excellent school projects involving revegetation - and there are some grants out there specifically for this work at schools.
- We are no longer funding pure academic research. Any academic applicants need to show how their research is directly linked to a community group doing conservation work. Research needs to be of benefit to those groups working on habitat or species conservation - eg I won't accept applications for research on how climate change will affect a particular species without the research being done in conjunction with a group that can work towards conserving that species on the ground. I will only accept 5 applications per round for consideration.
- Please note that applications for funding are highly competitive and we are only a small group with limited resources. You need to show innovative and collaboration, and most importantly, it must be clear how you will directly make positive changes to the natural living environment.
