Support is given to projects that enhance or maintain the vitality and diversity of the Australian natural living environment.
The application procedure below applies for the Foundation Grants and the RE Ross Trust Small Victorian Rural Grants. They both use the same guidelines.
Mission
The objectives of the grants are:
- to build capacity in local communities to effect long-term beneficial change in the natural environment
- to support and encourage research, monitoring and knowledge sharing relating to all aspects of Australia's natural environment
Principles
Wherever possible, funded projects will:
- be innovative and serve as a model for future projects
- show collaboration with other groups, particularly community groups
- result in long term improvement of the natural environment
- indicate clearly, and thoughtfully, how advice of the project's outcomes will be shared
The more closely your project is aligned with the above principles, the more likely you are to be considered. Individuals as well as organisations are invited to apply.
Exclusions
The Norman Wettenhall Foundation will not support future project applications that:
- are concerned with advocacy
- are concerned with buildings, art, general education, social welfare and medical research or health matters
- include the purchase of equipment, except when a part of a larger project
- contribute to capital or endowment funds established to provide a corpus for institutions
- include domestic or international travel, unless critical to the application
- are focussed on the rehabilitation or rescue of animals
- are primarily focussed on kitchen or bush gardens, nurseries or arboretums
Procedure
1. Please contact the Executive Officer for pre-approval. Send a small summary of your project by email. Contact details appear below. Please check the advice given on the "Grants" page before you seek approval. No pre-approval will be given in the week directly prior to the closing date.
2. Once you have been given approval to submit, please carefully follow the guidelines below. We have tried to make the application procedure as simple as possible, but please use the sub-headings given in points 3 and 4. Applications from academic institutions to adhere to point 7 as well.
3. Your application MUST contain the following information on the FIRST page of your application. This is not a cover sheet, but page one of your application.
- Name of Applicant (contact person)
- Name of Organisation
*

- Address
- Telephone contacts
- Email contact
- Grant amount sought and total budget of overall project (2 figures here)
* Please note: if you require payment to be made out to your parent organisation or auspicing body, please supply their details and confirmation from them that they will pass the grant funds on.
4. In no more than three pages, applicants are asked to provide a brief description of the proposed project, using these sub-headings:

6. Where the project involves a publication, details should be provided on the quantities concerned and intended modes of distribution. Bids to support any form of publication will only be considered where a case can be made that it fills a gap in existing literature.
7. Applicants from academic institutions seeking funding should include a curriculum vitae and a recommendation from their Supervisor or Head of Department. Grants should not exceed $5,000. Research needs to be part of a wider, collaborative project with the community and your application needs to show evidence of this as well as showing how your work will directly benefit the natural living environment. Applications should be submitted through the Research Grants Office. We will not fund your school's administration levy.
8. Please email your application. There is no need to send an additional hard copy once you have received verification that your application was received electronically by the Executive Officer.
We are trying to reduce paper usage in the office. Therefore, our Trustees view applications on an internal website - we do not make paper copies. Additional materials that can't be made into PDFs can be viewed at the meeting, but please check first before sending extra material. If you can't email your application contact the Executive Officer for help.
9. Please DO NOT send ATO certificates, incorporation certificates, annual reports or other certificates. You are not required to have DGR or TCC status to receive a grant. Unless asked, do not supply additional information or post hard copies of your reference letters.
10. Keep your PDFs small - save as small size please. If you can, try and save all your documents in one PDF. Save your file with your organisation name.

You will be contacted by mail about your application after each meeting.
Feedback on your application is not given.
Subsequent to Funding
Funded projects are required to provide regular reports, as specified by the NWF in the Grant Conditions document which accompanies the funds.
Grant conditions:
- The grant is to be used for the project specifically listed in the application. The Norman Wettenhall Foundation should be advised of any changes to the project content or schedule.
- The grant must be used within the time frame as specified in your application, unless an extension is granted.
- Grants are to be used for projects undertaken in Australia.
- Your organisation is to keep detailed financial records of the grant.
- Your organisation must notify The Norman Wettenhall Foundation of any publicity relating to the grant, prior to the release of that publicity.
